July and August tend to be the busiest time of year for getting away to sun, sand and exotic climes. For many this means a frantic crash course of diet and exercise to shed a few pounds and feel that bit better about sporting that bikini or pair of Speedos. Of course no one should feel any pressure whatsoever to look a certain way and the idea of being “in shape” is a personal and subjective notion. This article is aimed at providing some tips and tricks to those who wish to lose weight and gain some muscle definition.
The 5 P’s
Perfect planning prevents poor performance! Obviously perfect planning is nigh on an impossibility but if we make the effort to plan as best we can and visualise the journey ahead we are taking big strides towards our goals. Without a clear vision of what you want to and are able to achieve it will be far more difficult to reach the point you want to get to. Figure out how much time you have to make your goal, and then visualise each and every step of your progress; where do you want to be after 2 weeks, 5 weeks, 12 weeks and how can this be achieved? Also if you genuinely think you’ve bitten off more than you can chew and been unrealistic/over ambitious don’t be afraid to amend your training and diet accordingly.
Set your goal
Continuing from the first point, have a reachable and specific goal in mind. It is important that your continued goals are as precise as possible as vague targets will yield less than optimal results, try to make the target as clear as possible!
As the saying goes – Rome wasn’t built in a day. Patience and consistency are key to your success so don’t lose heart when you can’t notice significant difference after only a week. Sustainable long term progress happens through small, consistent changes! Although the temptation might be strong, quick fixes, shortcuts and fad diets should be avoided at all costs, THERE ARE NO SHORTCUTS. Gradual small steps in the right direction will bring great results; focussing on things week by week and breaking goals into smaller manageable chunks will work wonders. Keep your meals and training consistent and you will soon reap the rewards.
Effort in, Reward out
I’m not going to lie to you and say do this, this and this and you’ll have your beach bod in no time, it will not be easy! Setbacks are inevitable but don’t worry about them, get back on the horse, keep up the consistency and all will be well. The odd missed workout or fast food splurge isn’t the end of the world. Ultimately the results you get are dependent on how dedicated you are with your investment of time, energy and focus – the more you push yourself the more you will be rewarded.
You don’t need a complex system of colour coordinated Tupperware boxes to enjoy an effective and healthy diet, you can of course do this if you want and it will work well for you! The main thing is to eat nutritionally balanced meals with the odd treat thrown in. Many people don’t seem to realise that your desired physique and favourite foods can go hand in hand; we just need to be responsible with things and ensure the food and drink we consume isn’t jeopardising our goals. Just to throw in another old cliche – ‘we are what we eat’ and no amount of exercise will be able to counter a poor diet. So enjoy your treats, keep things in moderation, and try to learn what works well (and not so well) with your body. Check out some of the USN blogs on meal prep for some specific tips and advice!
